AGM results

There was a good turnout at the Takapuna Soccer clubrooms for the Manchester United FC Supporters Club of New Zealand AGM this afternoon. The clubrooms have a great view, overlooking the main pitch with a panorama of the Auckland city in the background.
There was lots of food and chat and a few pints before we got down to business.

Woody thanked the outgoing committee for their exceptional work last season and Katrina produced a very positive financial account. A number of ideas of how to use the surplus were briefly discussed, if you have some ideas, please let a committee member know.

Nominations:

Chairman: Brian Wood ... unopposed and accepted
Vice Chairman: Graham Goodinson ... unopposed and accepted
Secretary: Katrina Harris ... unopposed and accepted
Treasurer: Rob Harris ... unopposed and accepted

Committee: Mick Hinder, Ken Faint, Pauline Sutcliffe and Chris Goodinson.

So a good afternoon was had by all and remember this is YOUR club and anytime you wish to comment on a issue or bring something up, don't hesitate to let a committee member know or come along to a monthly meeting at the Speakers Corner.

Stalemate ?

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he “can’t have too many complaints” after United began the season with a frustrating draw at home to Newcastle.

United began brightly enough, but Newcastle managed to take the lead in one of their rare genuine attempts on goal when the unmarked Obafemi Martins scored with a header on 22 minutes. Darren Fletcher’s reply came two minutes later, but the Reds couldn’t build on the Scot's equaliser.

“In the first half we played well,” added the boss. “[Shay Given] was fortunate when Fraizer Campbell’s header hit him on the head. He made three or four good saves, actually. They took the lead, but when we got the equaliser straight away I thought that would have sent us on our way.”

In the second half, however, United’s attacking intent was blunted following injuries to Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs. Sir Alex said: “Our attacking play was good in the first half. But in the second half, having lost Michael and then Ryan to injury, we lost a bit of experience at a vital moment in the game.

“Without the proper balance to the team in terms of width, it was a struggle in the second half for us. We couldn’t break them down, although we hit the bar through Vidic, but nothing too dangerous.”

Four seasons in one day

Well as the excitement builds for the opening match of Uniteds new campaign, the Sunday football team are winding down theirs, with all the cancellations a certain sadness is prevalent, but we still have a few games left to spur us on and a great goalscoring race to focus on.

As the last of the rain filters out this morning and we look ahead to a fine Spring, a couple of fixtures loom large, the Manchester United FC NZ Supporters Club AGM and the tournament. Details coming.

A full on website is being developed to take over from the ramblings of one old westie and hopefully this will be up and running before the end of the month !

The quiz trivia nights are still on at the Speakers Corner, so if you have a trivia bent or just like a good night, drop in to Browns Bay tonight and meet the 4-4-2 champion team, kick-off is 7.30 pm. Good beer, great food and a excellent atmosphere.

Manchester United take on Juventus in the last friendly this Thursday morning and then Portsmouth on Monday morning in the Community Shield.
