Champions League

After the dismal draw against Aston Villa on the weekend, the Red Machine travelled to Spain for a Champions League match.

The first half was close and tight affair with only two or three chances, the best came from Anderson on the left sending a beautiful ball into the middle, where Rooney brought it down and set it up for Ronaldo on the thirty five, his shot just tipped on to the crossbar by the struggling Villareal keeper. Then a couple of minutes later Ronaldos freekick was easily pushed away for a corner.

Into the second and its Ronaldo again, as his shot is batted back to Rooney who can't convert. On the hour and there is two more chances for United, with Anderson pushing it wide and then Rooney gets thru but fails to chip the keeper.
Then Vila pick up the pace and a ball passes across the United box just out of reach of the two Vila strikers. The atmosphere changes as the news that Celtic have scored in the other group match, a draw here would have been enough for both teams to go thru, but if Celtic win and United grab a goal then it all changes for Vila.
In the seventieth minute and there is a small cheer as Aalborg levels against Celtic.
Ten minutes later and its Rooney who gets by his defender and passes the ball into the box, but a defender gets a deflection and it nearly goes in for an own goal.
With five minutes to go Tevez finally gets on the field, I still think Fergie is treating Carlos very poorly after all the little dynamo has done for this team.
The game peters out as Celtic concede another and both United and Vila know they are going thru to the next round.

Gutted

After watching a great All Black match this morning and getting all hyped to watch the Reds, I find Sky have changed the schedule and the Manchester-Stoke game ain't on. Then I discover that we thrashed the Potters five nil ! Double whammy !!

Might just watch Arsenal lose, to have a laugh.

United vs QPR plus

If you looking for the write up to Arsenal, it won't happen, LOL.

Manchester United 1 - QPR 0,

United’s mixture of youth and experience reached the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup after overcoming a dogged Queens Park Rangers at a bitterly cold Old Trafford.

The Reds were much-changed after the weekend defeat by Arsenal but had enough to see off the Championship side in a scrappy game which only spluttered into life late in the second half. Carlos Tevez broke the visitors' resistance from the penalty spot with 15 minutes left and United saw out the rest of the game without great alarm to reach the last eight for the first time since lifting the trophy three seasons ago.

As expected, Sir Alex Ferguson opted to rest several of his senior players and hand starts to youngsters Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson and Rodrigo Possebon – the latter for the first time since suffering a leg injury in the last round against Middlesbrough and the Brazilian midfielder almost got on the end of Anderson’s sixth-minute corner, only to see the ball nicked from the top of his head.
Tevez started as the only out-and-out striker and was determined to impress, twice testing Radek Cerny from the edge of the box early on and then shaving the near post with a flick-on from John O’Shea’s cross.

I personally think Tevez is being treated unkindly by Fergie, he is a far better player than Berbetov. But who knows whats going on in the gaffers head !

STOKE overnight, the game is the Sunday morning replay, 8.30 am Sky Sport 2.

Much better time, brekky and football, :)

A great escape ?

Hardly seems fitting to call the game this morning an escape, when you have twenty-six shots on goal compared to six of your opponents !
In a game which we totally dominated but couldn't put one in, the Celtic were lucky indeed to lead and finally it was left to Ronaldo, who blasted a shot which the goalkeeper couldn't handle and Giggs headed home the rebound. We still could have grabbed a winner, but in the last ten minutes United put the ball across the face of the goal three times without anyone getting a touch.

Have to wonder about playing Celtic dressed in blue, a Fergie laugh from his Rangers days ?
I mean hardly a colour clash, Red vs green/white !
