Building to the Best

George Best's legacy is giving teenagers the chance of a lifetime.

The George Best Memorial Trophy, a two-legged fixture between teams from Belfast and Manchester, is the brainchild of Barbara McNally, the United icon's sister.

“George said remember me for my football and that’s exactly what we did," said Barbara, referring to the matches which took place at United's training ground on 17 March - Saint Patrick’s Day and in Belfast on 22 May - George’s birthdate.

The Manchester United Foundation team was represented by players from Trafford, Salford and Wythenshawe social inclusion programmes. The George Best Foundation side was drawn from Castlereagh Borough Council’s Midnight Street Soccer initiative.

Both matches ended 1-1, but despite such a closely fought battle the sportsmanship from all the players was exemplary.

“The spirit in which the game was played was outstanding and each and every player is to be congratulated,” remarked Barbara. “I would like to extend our personal thanks to these young men who were outstanding ambassadors not just for both charities, but most importantly for the memory of George Best.”

The return of Wes

A very strong team lined up against the East Coast Bays last Sunday. Mark in goal, Rob, Walter, Phil, James in defence, in the middle were the young Brazilians, Gareth, Jan, Grant, with Mike and Wesley up front. Marc was still up at ECB clubrooms gathering strays.

The game was hard and fast with the United defence performing exceptionally well under Walter and Phils guidance and the midfield rotations every ten minutes kept the energies up. Once again our attack just couldn’t get close enough, until the Bays scored. This lead to a brilliant play from United, the ball coming from James at left back, swept across the field to the young Brazilian on the right wing, who sent Wes away with a beautiful thru ball, young Wesley never needs a second chance and he scored a great goal.
So we went the halftime break level and brimming with confidence. We were well prepared for an early onslaught, as the Bay always do straight after the break and they tried to break thru but Walter and Phil were well up to the task. Our attack was still pushing forward and the boys went close a number of times, before the Bays got a couple of crackers, just pure class shots. Then they got a couple of scummy ricochets. Now normally we would start hanging heads and like, but with a small tight team, we did the opposite and went on attack quickly getting a penalty when the Bays defence hacked down one of our star Brazilians. The young lad took the kick and drove it into the net, Oh Yeah. This seemed to rankle the ECB old boys and the more they argued with each other and the ref, the more we pushed forward, this led to a corner which Jan strolled forward to take. After he mutilated the corner flag he sent a perfect ball across the area and Walter stepped up and said thank you very much, with a smashing header into the Bays goal. We continued to attack and went close a couple more times before the ref decided enough. Well we had lost, but everybody was chuffed with our performance and it was a great farewell to the young Brazilians, who have definitely energized us every time they played for us.

Most of the lads shot thru to watch the Warriors, with Jan and Marc fronting up to the clubrooms and they happily shared the player of day rewards !
