FA Cup action

Manchester United beat Southampton 3-0 on Sunday, to set up an FA Cup fourth round clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani and Gibson sealed the win against a Saints side that was reduced to 10 men after only 36 minutes.

The Reds almost took the lead on 17 minutes when Berbatov’s cheeky back-heel sent Nani through on goal. The Portuguese shot low and hard across goal but Davis got down smartly to push the ball clear and preserve parity. United took the lead through 18-year-old Danny Welbeck. It didn’t quite match the 30-yard screamer he scored against Stoke in November, but the goal justified his selection in the team and confirmed the youngsters’ penchant for goals. United then roared into life and could have been 3-0 up after 30 minutes. They would have been but for veteran defender Chris Perry, who first denied Dimitar Berbatov and then Michael Carrick with last-ditch tackles.

United were 2-0 up and cruising within three minutes of the restart, courtesy of a Nani penalty, who sent Davis the wrong way to double the Reds’ lead. And Darrel Gibson rounded out the scoring with his first United goal, ten minutes from full-time.
