Man Utd NZ v Norwest
A wet miserable looking day greeted the Red Army in the Huapai valley, as the Manchester United Supporters club team took on Norwest. The team was looking a little thin but with the addition of Karl (Marcs nephew) and his mate Nick, we took the field. Mike was in goal, Phil, Marc, Phil, James in defence, Karl, Grant, KJ and Jan in midfield, with Gareth and Mikey up front. SA Kevin, Nick and young Hayden were on the bench.
The game started well and United forced the pace, so much so, that after 30 minutes Mike in our goal had hardly touched the ball! Then one slip gave Steve (Oxo) a chance and he took it like the finisher he is. Straight away they charged us again and got a lucky goal, the ball looked like it never crossed the line, but 'thats the breaks'. We settled down and launched our attack once more and it was Grant who scored a good goal, then Gareth hit the crossbar and we were right back into it, looking a little too good for Norwest so their ref then blew up for halftime.
Into the second and again it was all Manchester United NZ, as KJ feed the wings of Karl and Nick and the lads charged down the lines, with excellent calling from Mike up front. Then as Norwest got desperate they got dirtier and Gareth was hacked down in the box, Gareth strode to the spot, but he pushed it just wide. So the equaliser went begging and in an instant it was down the other end and Oxo got another. The fairness of all this, is absorbed in the saying 'that’s football' and United were not done with yet as Marcs youngest nephew Hayden took the field and he laid siege to them on the right hand side, with Gareth and Mike dominating the centre it was only a matter of when and this time it was Mike who was brutally hacked, but because he didn’t go down, the ref allowed play to continue and Mike hobbled to the ball and spun it back in the box for Gareth to score.
But that was it and although we kept up a strong attack we couldn’t score again. Norwest picked KJ as player of the day, most deservedly as he had strolled past most of the Norwest team thru the game. Great day and some good football, even if we lost, but heads up, as we have East Coast Bays next week, so full attendance required.
The management would like to thank all those who turned up and especially the supporters, James missus, Mel and Mikes others, Marcs brother Roy, Mick and Alma. And hope Phil recovers from his wicked knee twist …
